What can you drive with category B: 125 motorcycle, trailer, tractor
Category B is not just a passenger car. The Act on Vehicle Drivers adds trailers and mopeds to it, and on Polish territory also an agricultural tractor and a motorcycle up to 125 cc. Below you will find each of these vehicles with the conditions you must meet and whether the entitlement works abroad.
This guide covers the Polish driving licence and the rules that apply in Poland. Legal status checked on 11 September 2026.
Category B covers a motor vehicle with a permissible maximum mass up to 3.5 t (not a bus or motorcycle), also with a light trailer up to 750 kg, plus a moped and light quadricycle. Poland only: a farm tractor, a 125 cc motorcycle after 3 years and an alternative-fuel vehicle up to 4250 kg after 2 years.
Which vehicles category B covers
The legal basis is art. 6(1)(6) of the Act on Vehicle Drivers (ustawa o kierujących pojazdami). Category B entitles you to drive a motor vehicle with a permissible maximum mass (in Polish: dopuszczalna masa całkowita, DMC) not exceeding 3.5 t, except a bus and a motorcycle. You will find the DMC in the registration certificate (dowód rejestracyjny).
In practice this means a passenger car, a van up to 3.5 t or a small campervan, as long as it stays within that mass. What counts is the DMC entered in the document, not how much the vehicle weighs at a given moment.
How many people can you carry? The official question catalogue asks about this in question no. 6391, and the correct answer is 9 people including the driver. The limit does not come from art. 6 but from the definition of a bus in the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym), art. 2(41): a bus is a motor vehicle designed to carry more than 9 people including the driver. You cannot drive a bus with category B.
A quadricycle other than light (for example a heavier quad or a microcar) is, in question no. 1864, a vehicle for category B1. Since a quadricycle is a motor vehicle, it also falls within category B. In the test, answer as the catalogue does: category B1 or higher.
Trailer with category B: three mass thresholds
Trailers cause the most confusion, so they have a separate, detailed article on the light trailer, code 96 and category B+E. Here is just the short version.
- A light trailer, meaning one with a DMC up to 750 kg (art. 2(51) of the Road Traffic Act): you can tow it with any category B licence, with no extra conditions.
- A trailer other than light, where the DMC of the whole combination (car plus trailer) does not exceed 3.5 t: an ordinary category B is enough. Question no. 10093 confirms this.
- A trailer other than light, where the DMC of the combination exceeds 3.5 t but not 4250 kg: you need to have passed the practical part of the test, confirmed by code 96 on your licence (art. 6(2)).
Above 4250 kg category B+E begins, in which the trailer may have a DMC up to 3.5 t. Question no. 6401 shows a typical trap: a lorry with a DMC of 2.5 t towing a light trailer is fine, but a combination with a total DMC of 4.5 t is not.
125 cc motorcycle with category B after 3 years
If you have held category B for at least 3 years, in Poland you can ride a motorcycle with an engine capacity up to 125 cc, power up to 11 kW and a power-to-unladen-mass ratio up to 0.1 kW/kg (art. 6(3)(4)(a)). The same provision covers a three-wheeled motorcycle. A 125 scooter is a motorcycle in the eyes of the law, so exactly the same conditions apply.
You count the 3 years from the date you obtained category B, which is printed on your licence. Nothing gets added to the document; the entitlement comes directly from the Act. Question no. 10091 in the catalogue covers exactly this situation, and the correct answer is: yes.
Two caveats. First, check the power and the power-to-mass ratio in the motorcycle's registration certificate, because 125 cc on its own is not enough. Second, the entitlement works only in Poland, more on that below.
Moped and light quadricycle: category AM included
Every category B licence covers category AM vehicles (art. 6(1)(6)(d)). This means a moped, a two- or three-wheeled vehicle with a combustion engine up to 50 cc or an electric motor up to 4 kW, whose design limits its speed to 45 km/h, and a light quadricycle with an unladen mass up to 350 kg and a speed up to 45 km/h.
Question no. 10108 from the catalogue asks directly whether category B entitles you to ride a moped or a light quadricycle. The answer: yes, with no restriction as to territory. If you want to know what the route looks like for a fourteen-year-old, read about the AM licence from age 14.
Agricultural tractor and slow-moving vehicle: Poland only
On Polish territory category B entitles you to drive an agricultural tractor, a slow-moving vehicle and a combination of such a vehicle with a light trailer (art. 6(3)(1)). A tractor with a trailer heavier than light, or with two trailers, already requires category T or B+E.
Abroad this entitlement does not apply. Question no. 10090 in the catalogue asks whether you can drive an agricultural tractor outside Poland with category B. The correct answer: no.
Alternative-fuel vehicle up to 4250 kg
Art. 6(3)(4)(b) allows you to drive a motor vehicle powered by alternative fuels with a DMC above 3.5 t but not more than 4250 kg. The typical example is an electric van, where the batteries push the mass over the usual limit.
You have to meet three conditions at once:
- The excess over 3.5 t results from the use of alternative fuels, not from a larger body or payload.
- Information about this excess is recorded in the registration certificate.
- You have held category B for at least 2 years.
This is also a domestic entitlement, valid only in Poland.
What you cannot drive with category B
The list is short, but in the test and on the road it costs the most:
- a bus, meaning a vehicle for more than 9 people including the driver,
- a motorcycle above 125 cc or more powerful than 11 kW, and any motorcycle before you have 3 years of experience,
- a motor vehicle with a DMC above 3.5 t (apart from the alternative-fuel exception),
- a vehicle combination with a DMC above 4250 kg, and without code 96 above 3.5 t,
- an agricultural tractor with a trailer other than light.
You will find the full list of all categories with ages and vehicles in the table of driving licence categories 2026.
What works abroad and what only in Poland
The entitlements in art. 6(1) come from the category itself and are recognised wherever a Polish driving licence is recognised. The entitlements in art. 6(3) are Polish extensions, valid only on the territory of the Republic of Poland.
| Vehicle | Condition | Abroad |
|---|---|---|
| Motor vehicle up to 3.5 t (not a bus or motorcycle) | none | yes |
| Combination with a light trailer up to 750 kg | none | yes |
| Combination with a trailer other than light, DMC up to 3.5 t | none | yes |
| Combination with a DMC of 3.5-4.25 t | code 96 on the licence | outside Poland check whether code 96 is recognised in the country concerned |
| Moped, light quadricycle (AM) | none | yes |
| Agricultural tractor, slow-moving vehicle with a light trailer | none | no |
| Motorcycle up to 125 cc, 11 kW, 0.1 kW/kg or three-wheeled | category B for 3 years | no |
| Alternative-fuel vehicle 3.5-4.25 t | entry in the registration certificate, category B for 2 years | no |
One caveat for the youngest drivers: a category B licence obtained at 17 is valid only in Poland until your 18th birthday. The details are in the article on getting a driving licence before 18.
How this looks in the theory test
Questions about the scope of category B belong to the specialist part of the test. They are short, but they require you to know the numbers: 3.5 t, 750 kg, 4250 kg, 125 cc, 3 years, 9 people. The catalogue includes, among others, questions no. 6391, 6401, 10090, 10091, 10093, 10108 and 1864.
Before you start practising, look at question no. 10091 about the 125 motorcycle with category B and note the distractor with a speed of 30 km/h. Similar false conditions ("only in a built-up area", "only outside a built-up area") appear in several questions from this group. The rule is simple: the Act does not limit these entitlements by speed or type of area, only by mass, years of experience and territory.
Practise the whole pool in the category B mock test, and after every mistake go back to the table above and check which of the three conditions (mass, experience, territory) you mixed up.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ride a 125 scooter with category B?
Yes, but only in Poland and only after 3 years from obtaining category B. The scooter must have an engine up to 125 cc, power up to 11 kW and a power-to-unladen-mass ratio up to 0.1 kW/kg.
How many people can I carry in a car with category B?
A maximum of 9 people including the driver. A vehicle designed for more people is a bus and requires category D1 or D.
Does category B include a moped?
Yes, every category B licence entitles you to ride category AM vehicles, meaning a moped and a light quadricycle. You do not have to sit a separate test.
What trailer can I tow with category B without extra entitlements?
A light trailer with a DMC up to 750 kg, always. A heavier trailer when the DMC of the whole combination does not exceed 3.5 t. Between 3.5 t and 4250 kg you need code 96, and above that category B+E.
Can I drive an agricultural tractor with category B?
On Polish territory yes, also with a light trailer. Abroad this entitlement does not apply, and a tractor with a heavier trailer requires category T or B+E.
Can I drive a van with a DMC of 4 t with category B?
Only when the excess over 3.5 t results from an alternative-fuel drive, is recorded in the registration certificate, and you have held category B for at least 2 years. The entitlement works only in Poland.
Does a quad require category B?
A light quadricycle (up to 350 kg unladen mass and 45 km/h) requires category AM, which category B includes. A quadricycle other than light requires category B1 or higher, so category B is enough too.
