Does the driving licence - cat. B entitle you to ride a moped or a light 4-wheel vehicle?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

B. Yes.

Explanation

The illustration shows a Polish driving licence with a table of categories. A category B driving licence entitles you to ride a moped or drive a light quadricycle - answer B - everywhere, not only outside a built-up area (A); answer C is wrong.

The Vehicle Drivers Act states that a category B driving licence, in addition to cars up to 3.5 t and combinations with a trailer, also entitles you to drive the vehicles specified for a category AM driving licence - and category AM covers a moped and a light quadricycle. A moped is a two- or three-wheeled vehicle with a combustion engine of up to 50 cm3 or an electric motor of up to 4 kW, whose design limits its speed to 45 km/h; a light quadricycle is a vehicle with an unladen mass of up to 350 kg and the same speed limit, for example a small quad bike or a microcar. So with a category B driving licence you can ride a scooter without additional exams - but not a motorcycle, because that requires category A1, A2 or A (with the exception - only in Poland - of motorcycles up to 125 cm3 and 11 kW after holding category B for 3 years).

Legal basis: Art. 6 para. 1 point 1, point 6 letter d and para. 3 point 4 letter a of the Vehicle Drivers Act (ustawa o kierujących pojazdami); Art. 2 point 42c and 46 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
