Category AM from age 14: what you can drive and how to pass the test
Category AM is the first driving licence you can get in Poland: from the age of 14, for a moped and a light quadricycle. The course is short, the test follows the same rules as for other categories, and you handle the paperwork with a parent. Below: the vehicles, the dates, the fees and how the test goes.
This guide covers the Polish driving licence and the rules that apply in Poland. Legal status checked on 11 September 2026.
You can get a category AM driving licence from the age of 14. It covers a moped (engine up to 50 cm3 or electric up to 4 kW, top speed 45 km/h) and a light quadricycle. The course can start 3 months before your 14th birthday and the test one month before, but every stage requires written parental consent.
What you can drive with category AM
Category AM covers two kinds of vehicle (art. 6(1)(1) of the Act on Vehicle Drivers (ustawa o kierujących pojazdami)). The first is a moped: a two- or three-wheeled vehicle with a combustion engine of up to 50 cm3 or an electric motor of up to 4 kW, whose design limits its speed to 45 km/h. The second is a light quadricycle, meaning a vehicle with an unladen mass of up to 350 kg and a design speed of up to 45 km/h.
Electric scooters (the sit-on kind) also count as mopeds, as long as the motor does not exceed 4 kW and the speed 45 km/h. A more powerful electric scooter is no longer a moped and needs a higher category.
| Vehicle | Limit | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Combustion-engine moped | engine up to 50 cm3, speed up to 45 km/h | Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym), art. 2(46) |
| Electric moped | motor up to 4 kW, speed up to 45 km/h | Road Traffic Act, art. 2(46) |
| Light quadricycle | unladen mass up to 350 kg, speed up to 45 km/h | Road Traffic Act, art. 2(42c) |
What does AM not give you? You cannot ride a motorcycle, even a three-wheeled one, or drive a quadricycle other than a light one. That is exactly what the catalogue questions about category AM ask: the correct answer is always a moped or a light quadricycle, never any quadricycle or any scooter.
From what age: 14, but the course and test come earlier
The minimum age for category AM is 14. You can start the course at a driving school no earlier than 3 months before reaching that age (art. 21(1)), and take the state test at the earliest one month before your 14th birthday (art. 50(1)).
| Stage | Earliest |
|---|---|
| PKK and starting the course | 13 years and 9 months |
| Theory and practical test | 13 years and 11 months |
| Issue of the driving licence | 14 years |
At every stage you need written consent from a parent or guardian: for the course (art. 21(2)), for the test (art. 50(2)(8)) and for the issue of the licence (art. 11(2)). The ages for all categories are in our table of driving licence categories and ages.
How to set up a PKK for a teenager
You set up the PKK (Profil Kandydata na Kierowcę, the driver candidate profile) at the wydział komunikacji (transport department) of the district office or town hall for your place of residence. It is free. The order is:
- A medical examination with a doctor authorised to examine drivers; the fee cannot exceed 200 zł (PLN). A psychological certificate is not required for AM.
- A colour photo, 35 x 45 mm, as for an ID card, taken no earlier than 6 months before submitting the application.
- An application for a driving licence with written consent from a parent or guardian.
- A visit to the office with an identity document to show. The consent is signed by the parent, so the simplest option is to go together.
You usually get the PKK number on the spot, or within 2 working days when the documents are complete. You give it to the OSK (ośrodek szkolenia kierowców, the driving school) and when booking the test. The list of documents and typical mistakes are described in our step-by-step guide to the PKK.
How long the AM course takes and what it costs
The AM course is the shortest of all categories. The minimum under the regulation on driver training (§ 9): 5 hours of theory plus 1 hour of first aid training and 5 hours of practice. A theory hour lasts 45 minutes, a practice hour 60 minutes. During the first 4 hours of practice you ride at most 2 hours a day, then up to 3 hours a day.
The course ends with an internal test. If you pass the theory at WORD (Wojewódzki Ośrodek Ruchu Drogowego, the regional driving test centre) beforehand, the theory part of the course is not required (art. 23a) and only the practice remains.
The price of an AM course: 1400-2600 zł (as of September 2026, Rankomat data from August 2026). On top of that, the medical examination up to 200 zł, the test fees and 100 zł for issuing the document.
What the AM theory test looks like
The theory for AM looks the same as for any other category: 32 questions on a computer in 25 minutes, 20 on basic knowledge (YES/NO answers) and 12 on specialist knowledge (A/B/C). There are 74 points available, you pass from 68, so you can lose at most 6 points. The basic questions are shared by all categories, while the AM specialist pool concerns mopeds: the scope of the entitlement, power and engine size limits, mandatory equipment, the helmet.
A passed theory test is valid indefinitely. Someone training for category A1 may take the AM test (art. 50(4)). You can start a mock test with the same rules as at WORD in our category AM tests.
What the AM practical test looks like
The practical part consists of tasks on the manoeuvring area and riding in traffic. On the manoeuvring area, according to table 1 of the regulation on driving tests, for category AM you perform:
- Preparing to ride and checking the technical condition of the vehicle.
- Taking the vehicle off its stand.
- Riding a figure of eight.
- A slow slalom and a fast slalom.
- Moving off on a hill.
In traffic you ride for at least 10 minutes (table 7). On a two-wheeled moped the examiner does not sit behind you: they follow you in another vehicle and give instructions by radio. On a light quadricycle the examiner may ride with you. You get a negative result if you perform the same task in traffic incorrectly twice, or if the test is stopped because of a danger to safety.
The test takes place on a WORD vehicle. At the candidate's request and expense it may take place on a moped belonging to the school that trained you (art. 53(4a)). That is an option for people who prefer to take the test on a vehicle they already know.
How much the test and the document cost
Test fees are set by the regional assembly (sejmik województwa), so they differ between regions. In the Mazovia region the rates below have applied since 1 January 2026 (as of September 2026):
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Theory test | 56.98 zł |
| AM practical test | 229.99 zł |
| Issue of the driving licence | 100 zł |
In other regions the rates are similar. Every further attempt at the test is paid for separately. After a pass, a temporary electronic driving licence appears in mObywatel, valid for up to 30 days, until you collect the plastic document. The condition: you have already reached the required age, meaning 14.
The helmet and catalogue questions about mopeds
When riding a moped you must wear a protective helmet in every case, regardless of speed (question 4614 from the official catalogue). A moped's mandatory equipment includes a horn (question 6508), while a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit are not required.
Questions from the AM pool repeat a few patterns: which vehicle you may drive with AM (a moped, a light quadricycle), the maximum power of a moped's electric motor (4 kW, question 6614) and the maximum size of a combustion engine (50 cm3, question 6619). Anyone who knows the definition of a moped answers them without a second thought.
Do you need AM if you have or plan to get category B
No. A category B driving licence, and also A1, A2, A and B1, covers category AM vehicles. Anyone who passes category B at 17 rides a moped without a separate test. AM makes sense if you want to ride earlier, between the ages of 14 and 17, or if you do not plan a higher category.
The probation period for new drivers, applied since 4 September 2026, concerns a person who has obtained a category B driving licence for the first time. It does not cover category AM.
AM is not needed for an e-scooter. A teenager aged 13-17 needs a bicycle card (karta rowerowa) or a driving licence (AM, A1, B1, T, B), and an adult needs no document at all. Details in our article on age and licence rules for e-scooters.
A practical tip: start with the theory. A theory test passed at WORD exempts you from the theory part of the course and is valid indefinitely, and you can practise the questions from the official catalogue long before your 14th birthday.
Frequently asked questions
From what age can you get an AM driving licence?
From 14. You can start the course 3 months earlier, at 13 years and 9 months, and take the test one month before your 14th birthday. You receive the document once you turn 14.
Do you need a driving licence for a 50 cm3 scooter?
A scooter with an engine of up to 50 cm3 and a speed of up to 45 km/h is a moped, meaning a category AM vehicle. You can ride it with an AM licence or any of categories A1, A2, A, B1 and B, because they all cover AM vehicles.
How much does an AM driving licence cost?
An AM course is 1400-2600 zł (as of September 2026). Add the medical examination up to 200 zł, the theory test at 56.98 zł and the practical test at 229.99 zł (Mazovia rates from 1 January 2026), and 100 zł for issuing the document.
How long does the category AM course take?
The minimum is 5 hours of theory, 1 hour of first aid and 5 hours of riding. A theory hour lasts 45 minutes, a riding hour 60 minutes, and riding is limited to 2 hours a day at the start and 3 hours later on.
Is parental consent needed for the AM test?
Yes. Anyone under 18 submits written consent from a parent or guardian for the course, for the test and for the issue of the licence. Without it the school will not start training, and WORD will not admit you to the test.
Can I ride an e-scooter with category AM?
Yes. At the age of 13-17 an AM driving licence replaces the bicycle card for an e-scooter. After your 18th birthday an e-scooter requires no document.
Does the probation period cover an AM licence?
No. The probation period applied since 4 September 2026 concerns a person who has obtained a category B driving licence for the first time. Getting AM at 14 does not trigger it.
