How many questions and points in the theory test: how many mistakes

The theory test has 32 questions: 20 basic (YES/NO) and 12 specialist (A/B/C), worth 74 points in total. You pass from 68 points, so you can lose at most 6. That is, for example, two mistakes in 3-point questions or six in 1-point questions. No answer counts as a mistake.

How many questions are there in the theory test

The exam set has 32 questions, regardless of the driving licence category. They are divided into two parts (regulation on examining, § 19(4)):

• 20 questions on basic knowledge, which you answer YES or NO;
• 12 questions on specialist knowledge for the given category, with one correct answer out of A, B and C.

Every question has exactly one correct answer (§ 19(5)(1)). There are no multiple-choice questions where you have to tick two letters. The system draws the set in real time, so every candidate gets their own random set.

If you take several categories in one sitting, you answer the full 32 questions for each of them separately, and the result is calculated separately (§ 20 and § 22). How many points you can score: the scoring table

The questions are not equal. Each one carries a weight of 3, 2 or 1 point, depending on its importance for road safety (§ 19(5)(2)). The distribution in both parts looks like this:

The maximum score is 74 points, and a pass starts at 68 points (§ 19(9)-(10)). Half of the questions are 3-point questions, which together give 48 of the 74 points. That is where the exam is decided.

How many mistakes you can make in the theory test

You can lose at most 6 points, so you also pass with zero or one mistake. How many mistakes fit within the limit depends on which questions you get wrong: from two to six. Below are the combinations that use up the whole 6-point limit (any further mistake means a fail), and two that exceed it:

The conclusion is simple: a third mistake in a 3-point question ends the exam with a fail, even if the remaining 29 answers are flawless. On the other hand, six slips in 1-point questions still give 68 points. On the result sheet, which the examiner prints at your request, you will see the points for each question separately (§ 22(1)(1)(e)).

Why the questions have different weights

The regulation divides the questions into three groups according to their importance for road safety (§ 19(4)):

• high importance for safety: 3 points;
• medium importance for safety: 2 points;
• low importance for safety or for the order of traffic: 1 point.

A mistake on something that can cost a life on the road is therefore judged more severely than a mistake on a matter of order. That is exactly why the 68-point threshold does not mean "6 mistakes allowed" but "6 points of loss allowed". During the exam you do not have to guess what a question is worth: it is safer to treat every question as if it were a 3-point one.

How much time you have per question and whether no answer counts as a mistake

For a basic question you have 20 seconds to read the text, then 15 seconds to select YES or NO. For a specialist question you have 50 seconds in total to read and answer (§ 19(6)). The whole exam lasts 25 minutes.

Not selecting any answer is equivalent to a wrong answer and scores 0 points (§ 19(8)). A blank 3-point question therefore costs the same as a wrong answer. You can change your answer until you confirm it by moving to the next question or until the time runs out; you cannot go back to a confirmed question.

Do the questions in the exam repeat

The questions come from a public catalogue, which the Ministry of Infrastructure publishes as an Excel file on gov.pl (latest update: July 2026). The content is supervised by a verification committee appointed on 10 December 2014. No question from outside this database will appear in the exam.

That does not mean, however, that the set can be predicted. The catalogue has several thousand entries, and the system draws 32 of them in real time. Similar road situations appear in the catalogue in different versions, which is why memorising answers alone fails when a question is phrased differently from the one you remember from an app.

How to answer so you do not lose points

The scoring suggests a specific strategy for the 25 minutes of the exam:

1. Do not leave questions blank. No answer is 0 points, and with two options, YES/NO, even a guess gives you a chance to keep the points.
2. Treat every question as a 3-point question. You do not know in advance which ones are the most important, and they decide 48 of the 74 points.
3. Read to the end, including negations and words such as "always", "only" and "exclusively". You have 20 seconds for the text of a basic question, so there is enough time.
4. Watch the video or look at the photo carefully before choosing an answer. Basic questions are built from a visual and a description, and a detail in the image often decides the answer.
5. Use the option to correct before moving on, but do not let your mind go back to the previous question. It is no longer accessible, and the next one runs on its own timer.
6. Keep count of your margin. If you know you have already made two mistakes in questions about priority or speed, answer every following question with full concentration.

Are the rules the same in every category

Yes. The number of questions, the weights, the 68-point threshold and the time limits are identical for all driving licence categories and for the tram permit. The only difference is the pool of 12 specialist questions, which cover the scope of the given category: a different set is drawn for B, a different one for A, C or AM.

Deaf candidates take the exam under the same scoring rules but with more time: 40 seconds to read a basic question and 15 seconds to answer, 75 seconds for a specialist question, and 40 minutes for the whole exam (§ 19(7) and (11)).

How to check how many points you are ready for

After every mock exam, note down not just the result but also which 3-point questions you got wrong.
