How to study for the driving theory test: a 2-week plan

Study for the theory test every day for 30-60 minutes over 14 days: one section of the catalogue a day, a timed mock test every 2-3 days, and a review of your own mistakes a few days later. Research shows that self-testing and spaced reviews work better than reading and highlighting the material again and again.

What actually works when learning theory?

Three papers from the psychology of learning answer this question directly. The 2006 meta-analysis by Cepeda and co-authors showed that reviews spread out over time give better results than the same number of reviews packed into one session. Roediger and Karpicke, in the same year, showed that testing yourself improves long-term retention more than re-reading the material.

Dunlosky and co-authors assessed ten popular study techniques in 2013. Practice tests and spaced reviews were rated as highly useful. Highlighting and repeated reading were rated low.

Applying this to driving theory is simple. Instead of reading the traffic code three times, answer questions. Instead of one five-hour session on Saturday, study for half an hour every day. Instead of checking the correct answer right after a mistake and moving on, come back to that question after two or three days.

Why the public catalogue helps, but rote learning fails?

The catalogue of test questions is public. The Ministry of Infrastructure (Ministerstwo Infrastruktury) publishes it in Excel format, the latest update is from July 2026, and that is the version Łatweprawko uses. So you know the pool that the system at WORD (Wojewódzki Ośrodek Ruchu Drogowego, the regional driving test centre) draws from, and that is a huge advantage.

The trap is that the pool contains several thousand questions, and in the test you get 32 drawn in real time. The order is different from the catalogue, some questions come with a video or a photo, and many rules appear in several versions with altered wording. Anyone who memorised "for this question I click YES" loses confidence when faced with a twin version that has a different sentence order.

So learn the rule behind the question, not the question itself. If you get a question wrong about the gap when overtaking an e-scooter, remember the rule "at least 1 m when overtaking a bicycle, e-scooter, moped or motorcycle", not the question number.

How much time a day is enough?

The Łatweprawko editorial team recommends 30-60 minutes a day for 14 days. This is not a research result but experience from planning study: a shorter session does not let you get through a section and do a review, a longer one ends in clicking without reading.

For comparison: a course at an OSK (ośrodek szkolenia kierowców, a driving school) has a separate theory part with lectures and first aid training. Two weeks at 30-60 minutes is 7-14 hours of independent work with questions, which complements the lectures rather than replacing them. If you pass the theory test at WORD before the course, the theory part of the course is no longer required, because the Act on Vehicle Drivers (ustawa o kierujących pojazdami) exempts you from it (art. 23a).

Two rules about timing: study at the same hour so the session becomes a habit, and do not combine it with scrolling through your phone. A video question needs your full attention for ten to twenty seconds.

The study plan day by day

The plan assumes one section a day in learning mode and a mock test every 2-3 days. The sections match the topics in the question catalogue. If you miss a day, shift the plan by one day, but do not squeeze two sections into one evening.

Day 1 starts with a mock test without any preparation. The score does not matter; the point is the list of topics where you lose points. Day 13 is reviews only, with no new material. Spacing the mock tests every 2-3 days follows the findings of the research on spaced reviews: enough time passes between tests to check what has really stayed in your memory.

How to use mock tests?

A mock test only makes sense when it mirrors the test at WORD: 32 questions, 25 minutes, 20 seconds to read and 15 seconds to answer in the basic part, 50 seconds in the specialist part, the same scoring. Without a clock you train knowledge, but not pace.

1. Do the whole test without breaks and without peeking at the answers. Mark every question, because no answer scores 0 points, the same as a mistake.
2. After the result, open the list of mistakes. Assign each mistake to one of three groups: I did not know the rule, I misread the question, I ran out of time.
3. For knowledge mistakes, read the explanation with its reference to the rule and write the rule down in your own words.
4. Treat 3-point questions as a priority. There are 10 of them in the basic part and 6 in the specialist part, together worth 48 of the 74 points. Two mistakes in such questions use up the whole 6-point margin.
5. Come back to the same mistakes after 2-3 days, as the plan says. If a mistake repeats, the topic goes back on the list for day 13.

What to do the day before the test?

Day 14 of the plan is not for studying but for checking readiness. In the morning do one timed mock test. If you score at least 70 points and no mistake comes from a topic you have already reviewed, close the app in the afternoon. A new section started the evening before the test will not have time to sink in, and it takes away your confidence.

Get your identity document ready, because without it you will not be let into the room. Check the time and the address of the centre. Remind yourself of the procedure: questions drawn on a computer, no going back to the previous question, an answer can be changed only until you move on, the result straight after you finish.

If the morning mock test came out below 68 points, do not panic, but do not study late into the night either. Go through the mistakes from that one test only and write down the rules. Which study mistakes happen most often?

The first mistake is studying without a clock. The learner knows the answers, but in the test reads the question twice and loses the 15 seconds set aside for answering. The second is skipping the specialist part: 12 A/B/C questions are harder to guess than YES/NO ones, and some of them are worth 3 points.

The third mistake is clicking answers without reading the explanation. A score of 70 points without knowing which 4 points were lost and why changes nothing for the next attempt. The fourth is memorising pictures: with a photo question that differs by one detail, visual memory lets you down.
