Which of the following vehicles can you ride when you hold an A-category driving licence?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

A. A motorcycle with a side car.

Explanation

In the photo, there is the back of a driving licence with an entry for category A, valid from 19.01.13 to 19.01.28. With a category A driving licence, you are allowed to ride a motorcycle with a sidecar - answer A.

The Vehicle Drivers Act states that a category A driving licence entitles you to drive a motorcycle and the vehicles specified for category AM (a moped and a light quadricycle). A motorcycle, as defined in the Act, is a two-wheeled vehicle, a two-wheeled vehicle with a sidecar or a three-wheeled vehicle with symmetrically arranged wheels - so a motorcycle with a sidecar falls within category A without any additional entries. A four-wheeled motor vehicle with an unladen mass of up to 550 kg (answer B) is a quadricycle - it requires category B1 or B; category A only allows a light quadricycle (up to 350 kg, up to 45 km/h). A slow-moving vehicle (answer C) requires category T, B or another category listed in the Act, not A. It is worth remembering that category A also includes the A1 and A2 entitlements, and the full category A can be obtained from the age of 24, or from the age of 20 after two years with A2.

Legal basis: Art. 6 para. 1 point 1, 4 and 5 of the Vehicle Drivers Act (ustawa o kierujących pojazdami); Art. 2 point 42b, 42c and 45 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
