What can you use this switch for?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
B. To switch off the engine.
Explanation
In the photo, there is the right side of a motorcycle's handlebars with a red switch, next to which there are symbols of a crossed-out ignition circle and the letter "C". This switch is used to stop the engine - answer B.
The red switch by the right-hand grip is the emergency ignition cut-off switch, called a kill switch. When you move it to the position with the crossed-out symbol, it cuts the ignition and stops the engine without reaching for the key in the ignition; in the other position it lets you start the engine with the starter. It is placed under the thumb of your right hand so that you can stop the engine immediately without letting go of the handlebars - for example after a fall, when the motorcycle is lying on the ground with the engine running and the wheel turning, or when the throttle grip gets stuck. The main beam (answer A) and the horn (answer C) are operated with switches on the left side of the handlebars. The Road Traffic Act requires the driver to have control of the vehicle, and knowing such a switch is part of this skill; just remember that an accidentally switched kill switch is the most common cause of a "breakdown" in which the motorcycle will not start.
