You are outside a built-up area. Are you obliged to allow the bus driver to merge into traffic?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo we are driving outside a built-up area along a wide road behind a lorry; on the right, at a shelter marked with signs D-15 "bus stop", a city bus is standing in a lay-by (bus bay). Outside a built-up area you are not obliged to allow the bus driver to join traffic (włączanie się do ruchu) - the answer is NO.

The Road Traffic Act provides for the obligation to reduce speed and, if necessary, stop to let a bus leave a stop only in a built-up area. Outside it, a bus driver who is joining traffic must give way to vehicles travelling on the roadway, just like anyone joining traffic. This does not mean that you should ignore the bus: if it starts to pull out, you slow down to avoid a collision. Also watch out for passengers who may step out from behind the bus onto the roadway.

Legal basis: Art. 18 para. 1 and Art. 17 para. 1 and 2 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
