In this situation, should you use the sound or light signal when approaching the pedestrian crossing?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
NO
Explanation
In the video we are driving along a narrow roadway in town running right next to tram tracks; on the left, behind a barrier, we pass a tram stop platform with a shelter, and on the right there are pedestrian crossing signs, with a woman standing on the pavement at the crossing. When approaching the pedestrian crossing, you should not use the horn or a light signal - the answer is NO.
The horn and light signals may be used only when it is necessary to warn of danger, and in a built-up area the horn may be used only in case of immediate danger. A woman is standing at the crossing, but there is no immediate danger, so a signal would be misuse. When approaching the crossing, you must exercise particular caution, reduce speed and give way to a pedestrian who is on the crossing or is stepping onto it - and not tell pedestrians that you are coming by hooting or flashing your lights. Such a signal could frighten the pedestrian or be understood as an invitation to cross when another vehicle is approaching in the other lane.
