What you should you not do when coupling two carriages?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

A. Loosen the shoe brakes of the carriage to be coupled.

Explanation

In the photo you can see a worker who is connecting two tram carriages with a coupler. When two carriages are being coupled together, you should not release the shoe brakes of the carriage being coupled - answer A.

The carriage being coupled must stay still, because the other carriage is slowly moving up to it. If its shoe brakes were released, the carriage could move and crush the worker at the coupler, or make the connection impossible. Switching on the sidelights (answer B) does not get in the way of coupling, and opening the door in the second carriage (answer C) does not affect the safety of the coupling itself. You release the shoe brakes only after the carriages have been connected.
