How do you activate the parking brake?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

C. By opening of the bus door.

Explanation

In the photo you can see city buses at a stop, with passengers getting on through the open doors. You activate the bus stop brake by opening the bus doors - answer C.

In city buses the bus stop brake is linked to the doors: when the driver opens the doors at a stop, the system itself holds the vehicle at a standstill, and when they are closed, the brake is released and the bus can move off. This design protects passengers, because the bus will not move off while someone is still getting on or off, even if the driver presses the accelerator by accident. Holding the brake pedal down (answer A) is ordinary braking with the service brake, and pulling the parking brake lever halfway (answer B) only gives partial braking with the parking brake and does not switch on the bus stop brake, which is linked to the doors. The Road Traffic Act requires a vehicle to be built and maintained so that using it does not endanger the safety of the people travelling in it.
