What may weaken the effectiveness of the front braking system of a moped?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

B. Leakage of brake fluid from a brake line.

Explanation

In the photo, seen from above, there is the front mudguard and tyre of a moped on paving stones. The front wheel brake can be weakened by a leak of fluid from the brake line - answer B.

In a hydraulic brake, the fluid in the line transfers the pressure on the lever to the calliper at the disc. When the line or a connection leaks, the fluid escapes, air gets into the system, and the lever becomes soft and reaches the grip without braking effectively. A change in the fluid level within the normal range (answer A) is natural - the level slowly drops as the pads wear. Pressing the lever hard (answer C) does not weaken the brake; it can only lock the wheel. If you notice fluid stains near the wheel, a wet brake line or a soft lever, you do not ride until the brake has been repaired - a moped must have two independent, effectively working brakes.
