Extra oil is not a reserve "just in case". When the oil level is too high, the rotating crankshaft hits its surface and froths it, and frothy oil lubricates worse and cools less well. The pressure in the crankcase also rises, so oil is forced through the seals, and some of it may get into the combustion chamber. In diesel engines this can even lead to uncontrolled engine runaway. An oil mark between the two marks (answer B) and one slightly above MIN (answer C) are within the permitted range, although in the second case it is already worth topping up the oil. When the oil is above MAX, the excess must be sucked out or drained, and the cause may also be fuel or coolant getting into the oil.
