If you approach a railway crossing on a moped, how will you make sure that a train is not approaching?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
B. By turning your head and observing the railway line directly.
Explanation
In the photo there is a level crossing marked with St Andrew's crosses and "STOP" signs. To make sure that no train is coming, you turn your head and watch the tracks directly - answer B.
The Road Traffic Act requires the driver approaching a level crossing to exercise particular caution and, before entering the tracks, to make sure that no rail vehicle is approaching. A train comes from the side, and because of its mass and speed it needs hundreds of metres to stop. Watching "out of the corner of your eye" (answer A) or by moving only your eyes with your head facing ahead (answer C) does not give certainty - in a helmet your field of view to the sides is even more limited. That is why at a STOP sign you stop, clearly turn your head to the left and to the right, look along the tracks and only then do you cross, without stopping on the tracks.
