At which of the following speeds can you ride a motorcycle if you carry a six-year-old child?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
C. 30 km/h.
Explanation
In the photo a motorcyclist is riding along a town street, and behind them on the passenger seat sits a small child wearing a helmet and a high-visibility vest. When carrying a six-year-old child on a motorcycle, of the speeds given you may ride only at 30 km/h - answer C.
The Road Traffic Act states that the speed limit for a motorcycle, a quadricycle and a moped carrying a child up to 7 years old is 40 km/h. Of the three answers, only 30 km/h does not exceed this limit - 50 and 70 km/h are already prohibited. Signs that allow a higher speed do not cancel this limit: even on a road with a limit of 90 km/h, with a six-year-old behind you, you ride at no more than 40 km/h, and lower limits (a 30 km/h sign, a residential area with 20 km/h) still apply. The reason: a small child has a weak grip and little strength to stay on the seat when braking, accelerating and in bends, and a fall from a motorcycle at a higher speed ends tragically for them. In addition, the child, like the rider, must wear a protective helmet while riding.
