Which of the following activities are you not allowed to perform while riding a motorcycle?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
B. Using a mobile phone while riding, if this requires you to hold the phone in your hand.
Explanation
In the photo a man is standing next to a motorcycle with a helmet in his hand, ready to ride. When riding a motorcycle, you are not allowed to use a phone while riding if it requires you to hold it in your hand - answer B.
The Road Traffic Act prohibits a driver from using, while driving, a phone that requires holding the handset or microphone in the hand. On a motorcycle this is not only a petty offence, but also makes safe riding physically impossible - one hand on the phone means no access to the clutch, or to the front brake and throttle. Hands-free kits in the helmet, operated with a button or by voice, are allowed. Carrying a child up to 7 years old (answer A) is legal - it only limits your speed to 40 km/h and requires a helmet for the child. Using GPS navigation (answer C) is allowed if the device is fixed in a holder and you do not have to hold it - you enter the route before riding, and while riding you only listen to the instructions or glance at the screen. For a phone in your hand you can get a fine and penalty points, but the real penalty is that you will not notice a car pulling out of a minor road.
