What may be the effect a leaking exhaust system in a motor vehicle?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

B. Increased level of noise produced by the vehicle.

Explanation

In the photo you can see the end of the exhaust pipe sticking out from under the rear bumper of a car. A leak in the exhaust system increases the level of noise produced by this system - answer B. It does not increase the engine capacity (A) or the consumption of oil (C).

The Regulation on the technical conditions of vehicles requires a vehicle with a combustion engine to have an exhaust silencer, and the level of external noise must not exceed the value set for the given vehicle. A silencer with a hole or a cracked pipe lets the exhaust gases escape before the silencer - the car roars, and the exhaust gases can get into the inside of the car, where carbon monoxide has no smell and is deadly poisonous. The Road Traffic Act requires that the vehicle does not endanger safety and does not disturb public peace with excessive noise. A loud exhaust attracts the attention of the police, and the vehicle inspector will not pass the car at the technical inspection.

Legal basis: § 9 para. 1 point 1 and § 11 para. 1 point 15 of the Regulation on the technical conditions of vehicles and the scope of their necessary equipment; Art. 66 para. 1 point 1 and 2 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
