How should low-beam lights be aimed in a motor vehicle?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

C. In such a way that they light the road asymmetrically.

Explanation

In the photo you can see the front of a black car with its dipped headlights on during snowfall. Dipped headlights in a motor vehicle should light the road asymmetrically - answer C. A distance of up to 30 m (A) is too short, because the regulations require at least 40 m, and lighting the whole road symmetrically (B) would dazzle drivers coming from the opposite direction.

The Regulation on the technical conditions of vehicles states that dipped headlights should be asymmetrical and light the road on the right-hand side for a longer distance than on the left, light the road well enough for at least 40 m in front of the vehicle and give a clear line between light and shadow, and at the same time not dazzle other road users. Thanks to the asymmetry you can see the shoulder, pedestrians and signs on the right, and the beam on the left is cut off so that it does not dazzle drivers coming from the opposite direction. This is why, when you travel to a country that drives on the left, you have to cover part of the headlights with tape.

Legal basis: § 13 para. 1 point 4 and 5 and Annex No. 6 to the Regulation on the technical conditions of vehicles and the scope of their necessary equipment
