Are you allowed to move away from the parked motorcycle, if the engine is running?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
NO
Explanation
In the photo you can see the handlebars and dials of a motorcycle standing on paving stones: the rev counter shows that the engine is running, and the speedometer shows zero - the motorcycle is stationary with the engine on. While parked, you are not allowed to walk away from the motorcycle if the engine is running. The answer is: no.
The Road Traffic Act directly prohibits the driver from walking away from the vehicle when the engine is running. The reason is simple: a running motorcycle left unattended can move off at any moment - it is enough for a stranger to put it in gear and release the clutch, or for a child to touch the throttle grip. On top of that there is the noise and exhaust fumes with which you pollute the surroundings for no reason, and an invitation to a thief, who does not even have to start the engine. The Act also requires the driver, while parked, to protect the vehicle against being started by an unauthorised person - with the engine running, this is impossible. Before you walk away, even for a moment, you switch off the engine, take out the key and lock the handlebars.
