Are you allowed to move away from the parked bus if the engine is running?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo you can see the driver's seat of a bus, and the driver is walking away from the vehicle while talking on the phone. While parked, you are not allowed to walk away from the bus when the engine is running - the answer is NO.

The Road Traffic Act directly prohibits the driver from walking away from the vehicle when the engine is running. A running engine means that the bus may move off after a single movement of a lever or an accidental release of the brake - by a child, a passenger or a thief - and you have no chance to react. A separate rule also prohibits leaving the engine running while parked in a built-up area, except for a vehicle carrying out work on the road. That is why, before you get out, you switch off the engine, take out the key and apply the parking brake. Wanting to keep the bus warm in winter or cool in summer is no excuse - if the engine is to keep running, you stay with the vehicle, and in a built-up area you have to switch it off while parked anyway.

Legal basis: Art. 60 para. 2 point 1 and 3 and Art. 46 para. 5 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
