Question no. 13088 3 pts specialist BB1

At what maximum permissible speed can you tow another vehicle?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

B. 60 km/h outside built-up areas.

Explanation

The question is about the maximum speed at which you may tow another vehicle. It is 60 km/h outside a built-up area - answer B.

The Road Traffic Act states that a driver may tow a power-driven vehicle only on condition that the speed of the towing vehicle does not exceed 30 km/h in a built-up area and 60 km/h outside it. Answer A gives 50 km/h in a built-up area - this is the general town limit, but when towing a lower limit applies, 30 km/h. Answer C gives 80 km/h on a dual carriageway - this limit applies to a vehicle combination with a trailer, but towing is not a vehicle combination and has its own lower limits, which do not depend on the type of road. The low speed is because the towed vehicle usually has an engine that does not work, so it often also has weak brake and steering assistance, and the tow rope or rigid tow bar reacts to every jerk. Apart from speed, the Act requires dipped headlights to be switched on in the towing vehicle, a driver with the right driving entitlement in the towed vehicle, a connection that prevents the vehicles from coming apart, a warning triangle at the rear, on the left side of the towed vehicle, and a distance of 4 to 6 m between the vehicles when using a flexible tow.

Legal basis: Art. 31 para. 1 point 1-7 and Art. 2 point 49 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
