Can you drive a truck whose height, including the cargo, exceeds the permissible height?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
A. Yes, but provided that a relevant permit is obtained.
Explanation
In the photo a white lorry is carrying a tall load covered with a red tarpaulin, which clearly sticks out above the cab. A lorry whose height together with its load is greater than permitted may travel only after obtaining the appropriate permit - the answer is A.
The Road Traffic Act states that the height of a vehicle with a load must not exceed 4 m, and a vehicle that exceeds the permitted dimensions is an abnormal (oversize or overweight) vehicle, which may travel only after a permit of the appropriate category has been obtained. Without a permit (answer B) such a journey is illegal, but it is not absolutely prohibited either (answer C). Remember, however, that you will get a permit only for an indivisible load - if the height comes from a load that can be divided or placed lower, you must reload it. For a load higher than 4.3 m, the permit sets a specific route, and in every case you plan the journey so as to avoid low flyovers, footbridges and overhead contact lines.
