Should a safe distance of not less than 1 metre be maintained when overtaking a vehicle on the right?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
YES
Explanation
In the video we are driving along a city street, and at the right-hand edge of the roadway there is a cyclist with a courier bag, whom we overtake. When overtaking a vehicle travelling on the right, for example a bicycle, you keep a safe distance of at least 1 m - the answer is YES.
The Road Traffic Act requires you to exercise particular caution and keep a safe distance when overtaking, and when overtaking a bicycle, a cycle cart, a moped, a motorcycle, an electric scooter, a personal transport device (UTO) or a column of pedestrians - a distance of at least 1 m. A cyclist may suddenly swerve to avoid a drain cover, a pothole or the opening door of a parked car, and their balance is also upset by the air blast from a passing vehicle. If it is not possible to keep 1 m in the lane, you wait behind the cyclist for a place to overtake. The cyclist should keep as far right as possible to make overtaking easier, but this does not free you from keeping the distance.
