In this situation, is it permitted to overtake the vehicle on the right?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
YES
Explanation
In the video we are driving in the right lane of a roadway with two lanes in our direction, separated from the tram tracks by a green strip, and we go past a van travelling in the left lane, on its right-hand side. In this situation overtaking a vehicle on the right is allowed - the answer is YES.
As a rule, you overtake on the left. However, the Road Traffic Act allows overtaking on the right on a section with marked lanes on a one-way roadway, or on a two-way roadway if at least two lanes in a built-up area are intended for traffic in the same direction. Here the roadway has two marked lanes in our direction, and we are driving in a city, so overtaking on the right is allowed. When doing so, you keep to the general conditions of overtaking and a safe distance. Be careful, because the driver in the left lane may suddenly move to the right without seeing you in the blind spot.
