What the driving theory test in Poland looks like

A computer in a WORD exam room, 32 questions from a public catalogue, 25 minutes and a clock on every question. Below is everything you see on the screen, in numbers and step by step, and at the end a mock test on exactly the same rules.

The mock test needs no account, uses questions from the official catalogue and has the same clock and scoring.
32 questions 20 basic YES/NO and 12 specialist A/B/C
25 minutes for the whole test, the clock runs on every question
68 of 74 points pass mark: you can lose at most 6 points
20+15 seconds per basic question; 50 s per specialist question

The test step by step

From entering the room to the result usually takes less than an hour. This is how it goes in practice.

  1. 01

    Identity check

You show a valid identity document: ID card, passport, residence card or mObywatel on your phone screen. The examiner confirms your details and shows you to a workstation. At most 20 people sit in the room.

  2. 02

    20 basic questions

Each question comes with a photo or a video of a road situation. You have 20 seconds to watch and read and 15 to answer YES or NO.

  3. 03

    12 specialist questions

Three answers A, B, C, one correct, 50 seconds to read and decide. These cover rules, first aid, driving technique and vehicle construction.

  4. 04

    No going back, no pause

You can change an answer only until you move on. There is no return to the previous question, and no answer means 0 points for that question.

  5. 05

    The result straight away

After the last question the system shows the result on the screen. A passed theory test is valid indefinitely, so you take the practical part at your own pace.

Scoring: where the 74 points come from

Every question is worth 3, 2 or 1 point depending on its importance for safety. The catalogue draws questions so that the mix of weights is always the same.

How many mistakes you can make: worked examples →
Part3-point questions2-point questions1-point questionsTotal
Basic (YES/NO)106446 pts
Specialist (A/B/C)64228 pts
Whole test1610674 pts

The pass mark is 68 points, a margin of 6: two mistakes on 3-point questions and you still pass, a third 3-point mistake means a fail. Six mistakes on 1-point questions also pass.

Three things that surprise people in the room

  1. 01 The clock counts the reading. In the basic questions the 20 seconds are for watching the video or photo and reading the text; only then do you get 15 seconds to answer. Anyone who practised without a clock gets lost on the first questions.
  2. 02 The questions are literal. The wording comes from the official catalogue and sounds exactly the same in the exam. Phrases like "are you obliged to" or "are you allowed to" have to be read word for word, not skimmed.
  3. 03 The draw is fair, but not easy. The system draws from the whole catalogue while keeping the weights. There is no "easy set"; there is only a catalogue you have worked through or not.
