When riding a motorcycle, what effect do you obtain from engine braking?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

A. slightly releasing the accelerator without using the clutch lever.

Explanation

In the photo you can see a motorcyclist's boot on the gear lever and the motorcycle's engine. You get the effect of engine braking by slightly releasing the accelerator without using the clutch lever - answer A.

Engine braking means that after the throttle is closed, the engine stops driving the wheel and itself creates resistance - the pistons have to suck in air through the closed throttle and overcome friction - and this resistance, passing through the clutch and the gearbox, slows down the rear wheel. The condition is that the engine stays connected to the wheel: when you pull the clutch (answer B) or select neutral (answer C), you disconnect the drive and the motorcycle rolls freely, and downhill faster and faster. The lower the gear, the stronger the engine braking, so before a long descent you change down, and in town you close the throttle earlier before the traffic lights instead of braking all the way up to them. The Road Traffic Act requires braking in a way that does not cause danger, and engine braking is smooth, does not lock the wheel and saves the brakes - just be careful when changing down sharply on a slippery surface, because the rear wheel may slide.
