In this situation, do you have priority over the cyclist after turning right?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
NO
Explanation
In the photo you have stopped at the approach to a junction with traffic lights in a city and intend to turn right; the traffic lights show green, and the intersecting road you are turning into is crossed just beyond the junction by a cycle crossing with a red surface, on which a cyclist in a pink sweatshirt is riding; next to it there is a pedestrian crossing. After turning right you do not have right of way over the cyclist on the cycle crossing. The answer is: no.
The Road Traffic Act requires a driver approaching a cycle crossing to exercise particular caution and give way to a cyclist on the crossing, and it requires a driver turning into an intersecting road to give way to a cyclist going straight on along the roadway, a cycle lane, a cycle path or another part of the road that the driver intends to leave. Just after the turn you cross the cycle crossing, which the cyclist is already on - your green light does not give you right of way over her. You stop before the cycle crossing until she has left it; when turning right you also always check the right mirror and the blind spot, because a cyclist may be coming alongside you on a cycle path.
