Are you permitted to perform a reverse manoeuvre in this situation?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo you are driving at night across a bridge lit in blue and suspended on steel cables; cars and a lorry are driving ahead of you. You are not allowed to reverse on the bridge. The answer is: no.

The Road Traffic Act prohibits reversing a vehicle in a tunnel, on a bridge, on a flyover (viaduct), on a motorway or on an expressway. These are places where a vehicle moving backwards is particularly dangerous: on a bridge there is no shoulder or room to go around it, traffic is fast, and drivers coming from behind do not expect anyone to be moving against the flow of traffic. Even if you missed the exit before the bridge or drove onto it by mistake, you continue to the nearest place where you can safely make a U-turn or turn off. Reversing is allowed only outside these places, while exercising particular caution and after giving way to everyone else; if you cannot see what is behind the car, you ask someone for help.

Legal basis: Art. 23 para. 2 and para. 1 point 3 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
