In this situation, are you obliged after performing an overtaking manoeuvre to enter the right traffic lane?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
YES
Explanation
In the video you are driving in the left lane of a dual carriageway under a flyover, overtaking a lorry travelling in the right lane; ahead of you the right lane is clear. After finishing overtaking you are obliged to move back into the right lane. The answer is: yes.
The Road Traffic Act requires the driver of a vehicle to drive as close as possible to the right-hand edge of the roadway, and on a roadway with marked lanes not to occupy more than one lane. The left lane is for overtaking, not for continuous driving - anyone who stays in it blocks faster drivers, forces them into dangerous manoeuvres and creates traffic jams on a road where traffic could flow smoothly. You return to the right lane when you can see the whole overtaken vehicle in your interior mirror; you switch on the right indicator, move over smoothly and switch it off after completing the manoeuvre. If there is a line of vehicles in the right lane that you are overtaking one after another, you may stay in the left lane until you have passed the last of them.
