Are you allowed to overtake the emergency services vehicle in a built-up area?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo, from the cab of a tram, we see next to us a police car with its flashing lights switched on. In a built-up area you are not allowed to overtake an emergency vehicle (with flashing blue lights and a siren) - the answer is NO.

The Road Traffic Act prohibits overtaking an emergency vehicle in a built-up area. An emergency vehicle is usually going to an accident, a fire or a person who needs help, and its driver may suddenly change their path. Every road user, including a tram driver, must make way for it, stopping if necessary. So you slow down and do not try to overtake it, even if the tracks run next to its lane. After it has passed, you return to normal driving, watching out for other emergency vehicles.

Legal basis: Art. 24 para. 11 and Art. 9 para. 1 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
