Should you signal your intention to turn right in this situation?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the photo you have stopped at a junction with traffic lights in a town; the traffic lights show a red light, and above them on the same post there are sign C-2 "turn right beyond the sign" and, higher up, sign A-7, and in front of you there is a pedestrian crossing and a bus approaching from the left. Although you must turn right, you are obliged to signal your intention to turn with your indicator. The answer is: yes.

The Road Traffic Act requires a driver to signal an intention to change direction or lane in good time and clearly, and to stop signalling immediately after completing the manoeuvre, and the Regulation on road signs and signals states that sign C-2 requires you to drive to the right beyond the sign. The obligation to signal does not depend on whether you have a choice - pedestrians at the crossing and drivers on the other approaches may not see the mandatory sign and may not know that you will turn. You switch on the right indicator already while waiting at the red light, and when the green light comes on you move off, giving way to pedestrians on the crossing you are turning across, and you switch off the indicator after completing the turn.

Legal basis: Art. 22 para. 5 and Art. 26 para. 1 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym); § 35 para. 1 of the Regulation on road signs and signals
