You have just been overtaken by the vehicle in front of you. Are you allowed to increase your speed immediately after being overtaken?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo, the car that has just overtaken you is already ahead of you in the left lane, on the tram tracks, and in a moment it will be returning to your lane. For you, the manoeuvre is not over yet: until the overtaking vehicle is safely in front of you, you must not increase your speed. The answer is: no.

The Road Traffic Act prohibits the driver of a vehicle being overtaken from increasing speed during overtaking and immediately after it. If you sped up, you would lengthen the time the other car spends on the tram tracks or in the adjacent lane and make it harder for it to return. Instead, you keep your pace or ease off the accelerator slightly and rebuild the following distance from the car that has just pulled in front of you.

Legal basis: Art. 24 para. 6 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
