Which of the following emergency braking techniques should be applied in a passenger car fitted with ABS?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

A. Quickly and firmly depress the brake pedal.

Explanation

In the photo you can see the driver's feet on the pedals of a car. In a car equipped with ABS, in emergency braking you should press the brake pedal quickly and firmly and keep it pressed - answer A. Gradually increasing the pressure (B) makes the braking distance longer, and pumping the brake (C) is a technique from the days of cars without ABS, which in a car with this system only gets in the way.

The ABS system prevents the wheels from locking during braking: sensors measure the rotational speed of each wheel, and when one of them starts to lock, the system reduces the pressure in its brake for a fraction of a second and then restores it - many times per second, much faster than a human foot could do it. Thanks to this, the wheels keep rolling all the time, the car remains steerable, and you can brake and go around an obstacle at the same time. The typical pulsing of the pedal and rattling noise are a sign that the system is working, not that something is broken; you do not take your foot off the brake then. In a car with a manual gearbox, you press the clutch at the same time, so that the engine does not stall and does not interfere with braking.
