What is the maximum number of motorcycles which may ride in an organized column?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
A. 10
Explanation
In the photo you can see a group of motorcyclists riding in an organised convoy along a cobbled street. A maximum of 10 motorcycles may ride in an organised convoy - answer A.
The Road Traffic Act states that the number of vehicles travelling in an organised convoy must not exceed: for passenger cars, mopeds or motorcycles - 10, for bicycles, cycle carts or electric scooters - 15, for other vehicles - 5. The distance between consecutive convoys of motorcycles, as motor vehicles, must be at least 500 m. The limit is meant to allow other drivers to overtake the convoy in a reasonable time and to return safely to their lane between the groups; a convoy of 20 motorcycles (answer C) would be several hundred metres long. The number 15 (answer B) applies to bicycles, not motorcycles. So larger rallies travel in several convoys with gaps between them, or as an event on the road, which requires a permit. Riding in a convoy does not free you from the rules: each motorcyclist is responsible for their own following distance, speed and signalling of manoeuvres, and the rules on convoys do not apply to emergency vehicles and military vehicles.
