How many hours should a shortened weekly rest period of a driver working in road transport last?

The EU Regulation defines a reduced weekly rest period as a rest lasting less than 45 hours, which may be reduced to no less than 24 consecutive hours. The EU Regulation has no thresholds of 32 or 35 hours - there is only one limit, and it is 24 hours (35 hours is the weekly rest from the Drivers' Working Time Act, not a limit for road transport). The reduction is not free: every reduction below 45 hours must be compensated by an equivalent rest, taken in one block before the end of the third week following the week in question and attached to another rest period of at least 9 hours. As a rule, in any two consecutive weeks at least one weekly rest period must be regular; two reduced ones in a row are allowed only in international carriage of goods outside the country where the company is based.
