Question illustration: Which of the following control lights indicates that the emergency brake is on?

Which of the following control lights indicates that the emergency brake is on?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

C. C.

Explanation

In the drawing, three red symbols: A - a battery, B - an oil can, C - an exclamation mark in a circle with arcs on both sides. An applied emergency brake lever is signalled by light C - answer C.

The circle with arcs on the sides looks like a brake drum with linings, and the exclamation mark means a warning about the brakes. This warning light comes on when the emergency brake, also called the handbrake, is applied, and in many vehicles also when the brake fluid level is too low. If it stays on after you release the lever, you do not set off - the fluid and the braking system must be checked. Driving with the brake applied overheats the linings and weakens the brakes at the moment when you need them most. The battery (answer A) informs you that the battery is not charging, and the oil can (answer B) about a problem with engine lubrication. Before setting off, always look at the instrument panel - a red warning light after starting is a signal not to drive yet.
