What may be the effect if you use damaged or worn wiper blades in a passenger car?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
C. Deterioration of road visibility in the rain.
Explanation
In the photo you can see the rear window of a car with a wiper arm fitted. Using damaged or worn wiper blades makes it harder to see the road in the rain - answer C. Worn blades do not reduce the use of washer fluid (A) or of the battery (B) - these answers make no technical sense.
The Regulation on the technical conditions of vehicles requires a motor vehicle to have automatic windscreen wipers in a number that gives the driver a proper field of view. The rubber of the blade becomes hard and cracks because of the sun and frost; a worn blade leaves streaks, squeaks and smears water, and at night every streak turns the lights of oncoming cars into dazzling flashes. The Road Traffic Act requires you to drive at a speed suited to visibility, so poor wipers force you to drive more slowly or even make safe driving in heavy rain impossible. You replace the blades every year or two, ideally before autumn.
