The plate is placed at the back, with its point upwards, perpendicular to the roadway, with its lower edge at least 500 mm above the roadway. It tells approaching drivers that the vehicle in front of them is moving slowly, so they need to slow down earlier. A reflective warning triangle (answer A) is used to mark an emergency stop and a towed vehicle. Rectangular warning plates (answer C) mark the back of heavy lorries and of long or heavy trailers. When a tractor is pulling a trailer, the plate is needed only on the last vehicle of the combination.
