Question illustration: In which picture is the headrest properly mounted?

In which picture is the headrest properly mounted?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

A. A

Explanation

The correctly adjusted headrest is shown in photo A: its upper edge is at the level of the top of the head, and the headrest itself is just behind the head. In photo B the headrest is too low, at the level of the back of the neck, and in photo C - too high, above the head.

The headrest is not for resting your head while driving; it protects the cervical spine (the neck) when the car is hit from behind: the head thrown backwards hits the headrest instead of bending the neck. It works only when its centre is at the level of the head's centre of gravity, that is roughly at the level of the eyes and ears, and the distance from the back of the head does not exceed a few centimetres. The Regulation on the technical conditions of vehicles requires headrests on the front outer seats of a passenger car, and adjusting them is the driver's duty before driving.

Legal basis: § 11 para. 1 point 9 of the Regulation on the technical conditions of vehicles and the scope of their necessary equipment
