What should you first of all do before you set off on a long journey on a motorcycle?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

C. Check the level of the brake fluid.

Explanation

In the photo, a motorcyclist is putting on a helmet in front of a sport-touring motorcycle - getting ready to ride. Before a longer ride, you check above all the brake fluid level - answer C.

The Road Traffic Act requires a vehicle to be maintained in such a way that using it does not endanger safety, and of the three activities listed, only checking the brake fluid concerns a system on which your life directly depends. You check the level in a few seconds through the sight glass in the reservoir on the handlebars (front brake) and by the pedal (rear brake): a drop below the minimum means a leak or badly worn pads, and a system with air in it will not stop the motorcycle. The air filter (answer A) and the spark plug (answer B) are parts replaced during servicing according to mileage; their condition affects how the engine runs, but not safety while riding - at worst the motorcycle runs worse or will not start. Before a trip you also check the tyres and their pressure, the oil, the chain, the lights and the free play of the cables, and you secure your luggage so that it does not change the stability.
