How will you brake on a wet surface?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

A. Using the front and rear brakes.

Explanation

In the photo you are riding in town on a wet, slippery roadway in the rain towards a junction with a red light. On a slippery surface you brake with the front and rear brakes - answer A.

The Road Traffic Act requires you to brake in a way that does not cause danger, and on a slippery road this means spreading the braking force over both wheels. On wet asphalt each wheel has little grip; if you use only the rear brake (answer C), you use at most one third of what the motorcycle can do and easily lock the wheel, which then slides out sideways. The front brake alone in the wet, in turn, risks the wheel tucking under and a fall. By braking with both, gently and gradually increasing the pressure, you stop in the shortest distance and most stably; you keep the motorcycle upright and start braking much earlier than in the dry. "The engine and your feet" (answer B) is not a braking method - putting your feet on the roadway at speed ends in injury. In the photo you approach the red light with plenty of room to spare, because in the rain the braking distance can even double.
