Question no. 3857 2 pts specialist B

What might be the result of too strong braking of a passenger car not fitted with the ABS?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

B. Losing steerability.

Explanation

Braking too hard in a car without ABS may lead to loss of steering control - answer B. The braking distance will not be shortened by half (A), and the brakes will not be damaged (C).

When the wheels lock, the tyres stop rolling and slide on the road surface; a locked front wheel does not respond to the steering wheel, so the car goes straight on even if you turn the wheel, and the grip of a sliding tyre is lower than that of a rolling one, which makes braking even longer. Without ABS you brake hard, but when you feel the wheels locking, you briefly reduce the pressure and brake again - this is so-called pulse braking. The Road Traffic Act requires you to brake in a way that does not endanger road safety.

Legal basis: Art. 19 para. 2 point 2 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
