Question no. 6519 3 pts specialist AA1A2

What distance should you keep while riding a motorcycle and overtaking a vehicle outside a built-up area?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

C. At least 1 m while overtaking another motorcycle.

Explanation

The question is about the distance you keep when overtaking while riding a motorcycle outside a built-up area. The Road Traffic Act requires at least 1 m when overtaking another motorcycle - answer C.

The Act states that when overtaking, the driver of a vehicle must exercise particular caution, and in particular keep a safe distance from the vehicle or road user being overtaken; when overtaking a bicycle, a cargo cycle (wózek rowerowy), a moped, a motorcycle, an electric scooter, a personal transport device, a person on a mobility aid or a column of pedestrians, this distance must not be less than 1 m. One metre is an absolute minimum, which applies in the same way in town and outside it. Answers A and B give 2 m - there is no such number in the provision; when overtaking a single pedestrian, the Act requires a safe distance without giving a number, and the 1 m minimum applies, among others, to a column of pedestrians. When riding a motorcycle and overtaking another two-wheeler on a road with a 90 km/h limit, it is sensible to give more than a metre: the blast of air and a moment without room to correct the line can destabilise the rider being overtaken.

Legal basis: Art. 24 para. 2 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
