What may be the minimum tread depth of a motorcycle's tyre if it is not equipped with wear indicators?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

B. 1.6 mm.

Explanation

In the photo you can see a close-up of the front wheel of a motorcycle with a brake disc and a tyre with a clear tread. The minimum permitted tread depth of a motorcycle tyre without wear indicators is 1.6 mm - answer B.

The Regulation on the technical conditions of vehicles forbids the use of tyres whose indicators show the tread wear limit, and, for tyres not fitted with such indicators, tyres with a tread depth of less than 1.6 mm. The limit is the same for a motorcycle and a car. If the tyre has wear indicators (small rubber bumps in the tread grooves), what matters is whether they are level with the surface of the tyre; if it does not have them, you measure the depth of the groove. For a motorcycle the tread is especially important, because two small contact points with the road must clear away water - a worn tyre on a wet surface loses grip in a bend, and a motorcycle has no second pair of wheels to save it. Riding on a bald tyre is a defect for which a police officer may retain the vehicle registration certificate.
