When parking a bus on the roadway in this situation, are you obliged to switch on the position lights or parking lights?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the photo you can see, at dusk, a bus parked at the right edge of the roadway, with its rear lights on. When you park a bus on the roadway in such conditions, you must switch on the sidelights (position lights) or parking lights - the answer is YES.

The Road Traffic Act requires the driver of a power-driven vehicle, in conditions of insufficient visibility, during stopping not caused by traffic conditions and during parking, to use the front and rear sidelights or the parking lights. Dusk is exactly insufficient visibility, and an unlit bus on the roadway is easy to miss - a driver coming from behind will see it only at the last moment. You may switch off all the lights only when the place is lit so that the vehicle is clearly visible, or when you are parked off the roadway and the shoulder.
