When the barriers are lifted, are you obliged to make sure that there is no train approaching?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
YES
Explanation
The barriers at the level crossing are raised, so entering the tracks is allowed. However, this does not mean that you can drive across "blindly". Even when the barriers are raised, you are obliged to make sure that no train is approaching, because the automatic system may be faulty, and a train cannot be stopped within a short distance.
The law makes no exception for crossings with barriers: a driver approaching a level crossing exercises particular caution, and before entering the tracks makes sure that no rail vehicle is approaching. A separate rule prohibits driving around lowered barriers and entering the crossing when the barriers have started to go down or have not yet finished going up.
