In this scenario, can you enter the level crossing if you notice there isn’t enough space to continue on the other side of the crossing?

In the photo you are approaching a level crossing with raised half-barriers and signals that are off; beyond the crossing, cars are moving in your lane. You cannot drive onto the crossing if you see that there is no space on the other side to continue driving. The answer is: no.

The Road Traffic Act prohibits the driver of a vehicle from driving onto a level crossing if there is no space on the other side of the crossing to continue driving. Raised barriers allow you to drive onto the tracks only if you will leave them straight away; if there is a queue beyond the crossing or the vehicles in front of you are braking, driving on means a risk of stopping between the rails - and then the red light and the lowering half-barriers will shut you in on the tracks, with a train on its way. The principle is the same as at a junction, which you must not enter without space to leave it, only the stakes are higher. So you stop before the tracks and wait until there is enough free space on the other side for your whole car to fit beyond the crossing; only then do you move off and drive across without changing gear.
