When approaching a level crossing with overhead lines, should you be mindful of the extra risks involved?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the photo you are approaching a level crossing with half-barriers and light signals; the wires of the overhead contact line hang above the tracks, and next to the signal there is a yellow plate "Nie dotykać przewodów trakcyjnych" (do not touch the overhead wires). When approaching such a level crossing, you should be aware of an additional hazard. The answer is: yes.

The Road Traffic Act requires you to exercise particular caution when approaching and driving over a level crossing, and the general rule tells you to avoid any action which could cause harm to anyone. The overhead contact line above the level crossing carries 3000 V - there is a risk of electric shock even before you touch it, so you must not get close to it. That is why you must not drive over such a level crossing with a raised tipper body, an extended crane, a high load or a ladder on the roof; the wires hang lower than they seem. The second hazard: if a vehicle stops on the tracks and a wire is torn down, touching the bodywork or getting out of the car onto the tracks may lead to electric shock. In a passenger car the risk is small, but being aware of the high-voltage line above your head helps you avoid doing anything foolish.

Legal basis: Art. 28 para. 1 and Art. 3 para. 1 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
