When approaching a level crossing, are you required to adjust your speed according to changing conditions?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the video you are driving in the rain along a street in a town and approaching a level crossing with half-barriers and light signals, in front of which the roadway is painted red; cars are coming from the opposite direction. When approaching the level crossing, you are obliged to adjust your speed to the changing conditions. The answer is: yes.

The Road Traffic Act states that a driver approaching a level crossing is obliged to exercise particular caution and, in addition, to drive at such a speed that they can stop the vehicle in a safe place when a rail vehicle is approaching or when a safety device or a signal being given prohibits entry onto the level crossing. The general rule requires you to drive at a speed which ensures control over the vehicle, taking into account, among others, the condition of the road and the weather conditions. In the video the conditions are changing for the worse: it is raining, the roadway is wet and slippery - the braking distance increases. The red signal may come on at any moment and the half-barriers will start to come down, so you approach in such a way that, if necessary, you can stop gently before the line, without locking the wheels and without the risk of stopping only on the tracks.
