Does this sign indicate an exit from a town?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the photo, in winter, you are driving on a road through a forest; on the left there is a green board with the name of a town crossed out with a red line - sign E-18a "end of town". This sign marks the exit from a town. The answer is: yes.

The Regulation on road signs and signals states that sign E-17a "town" marks the entry to a town, and sign E-18a "end of town" marks the exit from a town. These are direction and place signs - green boards that only inform you where you are; they do not set a speed limit themselves. Whether the 50 km/h limit applies is decided by the white sign D-42 "built-up area" with a silhouette of buildings, and the sign that cancels it, D-43 "end of built-up area". Often both pairs of signs stand next to each other, but they do not have to: you can leave a town and still be in a built-up area, or the other way round. That is why when you pass E-18a, you do not speed up automatically, but check whether you have also passed D-43. E-18a has one legal effect: it ends the prohibitions placed below sign D-42 (they apply up to D-43 or E-18a), and a prohibition placed below E-17a applies in the whole area of the town.

Legal basis: § 66 para. 1 and 2, § 58 para. 3 and § 15 para. 3 and 4 of the Regulation on road signs and signals
